Hundreds of solar panels installed to power Coventry Building Society offices

Coventry Building Society has installed hundreds of solar panels across one of its main head office buildings as part of various initiatives to meet environmental measures outlined in its Climate Action Plan.

The UK’s second largest building society has installed 632 high-efficiency PV panels on Coventry House in Binley. The panels, which cover the entire roof, are expected to generate up to 211,000kwh each year – enough power to boil almost a million kettles of water. The improvements will help generate on average 30% of the building’s energy once it has been fully refurbished and fully operational.

Coventry House sits next to Coventry Building Society’s other head office buildings on Binley Business Park, Coventry, and was used by HSBC up until 2019. It’s set to reopen in 2022 once all building improvements have been made.

Abigail Beasley, head of enterprise shared services at Coventry Building Society, said: “We’re using energy-efficient solar power technology to help us to reduce our carbon footprint and be kinder to the environment while reducing the running costs of our head office buildings.

“We want to encourage our members to take steps to improve the energy efficiency of their homes too. That’s why we launched the ‘Green Together Reward’ which provides a £500 reward for our borrowers to carry out work that aims to improve their property’s energy efficiency.

“But we know we need to lead by example, and improving the energy efficiency of our offices is just one of the steps we’re taking.

“We signed up to the UN Principles of Responsible Banking at the end of 2021, and we’re committed to an ongoing process to align our strategy with the 2015 Paris Agreement and the UN Sustainable Development Goals. We’ve also produced our first Climate Action Plan, providing full details of what we are doing to reduce our impact on our planet, which is available on our website.”
