The Prime Minister has backed away from a 2019 Conservative Party manifesto promise of building 300,000 new homes a year by the middle of the decade.
Johnson said you have to go back to 1968 to find a time when we were building more than 400,000 homes a year. Adding that the UK has never built houses fast enough.

When was asked to give a cast iron commitment that he will hit the manifesto promise the Prime Minister said he could not do so.
He said: “I can’t give you a cast iron guarantee that we are going to get to a number in a particular year but what I can point you to is the record of delivery under Conservative governments and the way that we do it.”
In 2020/21 ONS figures show just 194,060 new homes were built.
