Population of England and Wales up 6.3% in 10 years – census

The population of England and Wales has increased by 6.3% to 59.6 million over the past decade, census data has shown.

On Census Day, 21 March 2021, the size of the usual resident population in England and Wales stood at 59,597,300 (56,489,800 in England and 3,107,500 in Wales); this was the largest population ever recorded through a census in England and Wales.

Figures show that the South East remains the most populous region in England with a total of 9.3 million people. London is the next most populous with 8.8 million, while the North East was the least populous at 2.6 million.

The East of England was the region which saw the biggest percentage rise in population increasing 8.3% from 5.8 million to 6.3 million.

The population of London Was by 7.7% in a decade increasing from 8.2 million to 8.8 million.

More than 24 million households across England and Wales filled in census questionnaires in spring last year.

Scotland’s census results are due out next year.
