Chancellor of the Exchequer Rishi Sunak resigns – others follow

Chancellor of the Exchequer Rishi Sunak has resigned.

Sunak said: “The public rightly expect Government to be conducted properly, competently and seriously.

“I recognise this may be my last ministerial job, but I believe these standards are worth fighting for and that is why I am resigning.”

Shortly before Sunak announced his departure former Chancellor and current Health Secretary Sajid Javid also resigned.

The pair have resigned following the scandal regarding former Housing Minister Chris Pincher. Pincher resigned from the role of Deputy Chief Whip last week and has since been accused of multiple cases of sexual harassment.

Earlier today former Schools Minister Nick Gibb urged cabinet ministers to oust Johnson. Gibb told Radio 4’s PM programme that Tory MPs cannot now trust No 10 to make decisions for the right reasons.

They fear No 10 is just acting to shore up support for the PM. That was not “a sustainable way of running a government”, he said.

He added: “We’ve got 40% of Conservative MPs who voted that they didn’t have confidence in the Prime Minister four weeks ago. Any other leader would have resigned by now with that level of opposition to them in their own party.

“And I think really, as I said in my article in The Telegraph this morning, it’s now for members of the cabinet, either collectively or individually, to make sure that that response to that vote does result in the resignation of the prime minister.

Gibb voted against Johnson in the last no-confidence ballot.

Defence Secretary Ben Wallace and Foreign Secretary Lizz Truss, both seen as future leadership contenders, are both believed to be remaining in place.
