Nadhim Zahawi named as new Chancellor of the Exchequer

Education Secretary Nadhim Zahawi (pictured) has been promoted to Chancellor of the Exchequer following the shock resignation of Rishi Sunak.

Sunak resigned alongside Health Secretary Sajid Javid in response to a loss of support by some parliamentarians for Prime Minister Boris Johnson.

The pair were not alone with Bim Afolami, MP for Hitchin and Harpenden and Conservative Party Vice Chair, resigning live on TalkTV in spectacular style.

A number of other Conservative parliamentarians have also made the decision to quit their Government roles.

Rishi Sunak resigned as Chancellor earlier today

Neither Sunak or Javid explicitly mentioned the sexual misconduct and Partygate scandals that have dogged the Government for months in their resignation letters.

Sunak in particular claimed his resignation was due to his, and Boris Johnson’s, differing approaches regarding the economy.

But both resignations also follow on from Johnson’s catastrophic handling of the Chris Pincher affair.

Earlier today the Prime Minister admitted appointing his ally as deputy chief whip despite having been told of misconduct allegations against him.

Zahawi was spotted entering No 10 just after 20:30 on 5th July following the resignations.

Zahawi has been a relatively popular member of the cabinet having successfully overseen the Covid-19 vacine rollout.

Following that Zahawi was promoted to Secretary of State for Education on 15th September 2021.

He was previously appointed as Parliamentary Under Secretary of State at the Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy on 26th July 2019 and as a Parliamentary Under Secretary of State at the Department of Health and Social Care on 28th November 2020.

He was also Parliamentary Under Secretary of State at the Department for Education from 9th January 2018 to 26th July 2019.

Zahawi was elected as Conservative MP for Stratford-on-Avon in May 2010.
