Jeremy Hunt named Chancellor

Jeremy Hunt has been named as the new Chancellor of the Exchequer replacing the sacked Kwasi Kwarteng.

Kwarteng was sacked earlier today following his botched mini-Budget and the ongoing economic turmoil it has caused.

He was the second shortest-serving Chancellor in British history.

Hunt served as Secretary of State for Health and Social Care from January to July 2018 and was first appointed Secretary of State for Health in September 2012.

In May 2010 Jeremy was appointed Secretary of State for Culture, Olympics, Media and Sport.

He was formerly Shadow Culture Secretary 2007 to 2010 and Shadow Minister for Disabled People 2005 to 2007.

He was Health Secretary between 2012 and 2018 followed by Foreign Secretary between 2018 and 2019.

He ran for the leadership of the Conservatives following the resignation of both Theresa May and Boris Johnson, who he was in the final round against.

During the last leadership race he criticised Johnson for investing in infrastructure instead of “wealth creation”, and proposed policies including a moratorium on business rates in deprived areas and a cut to corporation tax to 15% instead of a proposed rise to 25%.

He also said he would retain the rise in National Insurance rates and would not cut personal taxation until he “[got] the economy growing”.

Before his election the MP for South West Surrey ran his own educational publishing business, Hotcourses.

He also set up a charity to help AIDS orphans in Africa in which he continues to play an active role.
