Landlords to gain more power to evict unruly tenants, Government confirms

In a move to tackle anti-social behaviour, the Government has committed to granting landlords increased authority to evict troublesome tenants.

The announcement comes after extensive campaigning by the National Residential Landlords Association (NRLA).

Ben Beadle, chief executive of the NRLA, said: “Anti-social tenants blight the lives of fellow renters and their neighbours.

“Plans to end ‘no explanation’ repossessions risk making it harder to tackle such behaviour.”

Beadle welcomed the Government’s commitment to bolster landlords’ ability to evict unruly tenants and acknowledged the NRLA’s role in advocating for swift action against those causing misery in their communities.

According to NRLA polling data, 50% of landlords have previously attempted to repossess a property due to a tenant’s anti-social or criminal behaviour.

Of these landlords, 84% received no assistance from their local authority, while 75% had no support from the police in dealing with problematic tenants.

Beadle emphasised the importance of the law supporting the victims of anti-social behaviour and expressed gratitude for the Government’s agreement.
