LV= General Insurance (LV= GI), one of the UK’s major home insurers, reveals that home insurance claims relating to animal infestations have reached an all-time high.
Between 2021 and 2022, claims involving squirrels, the most troublesome pest, surged by 51%.
Accidental damage home insurance claims involving animals also saw a 35% increase within the same period.
Squirrel-related claims have continued to rise in 2023, with the average claim costing around £3,000.
These costs primarily result from squirrels chewing through pipes, cables, decking, and fascia boards, as well as dislodging roof tiles and damaging loft spaces, chimneys, and guttering.
Wasp nest claims are also on the rise, with the most expensive home insurance claim linked to a nest amounting to £26,700.
Most of these claims occur when homeowners attempt to smoke out or burn the nest, inadvertently setting fire to their property. Buildings insurance claims linked to fires typically cost around £30,000.
Martin Milliner, claims director at LV= General Insurance, said: “With an increase in the frequency and severity of storms we’ve seen over recent years, there is a higher chance of animal infestations in loft spaces where animals can get in due to dislodged roof tiles.”
He advised homeowners to check for gaps that could let animals like squirrels into their homes to prevent damage to pipes and electrical cables.
As warmer months approach, Milliner recommends keeping an eye out for animals seeking shelter and causing significant damage. He emphasised the importance of hiring professionals to handle infestations, ensuring a safer and more effective solution.
