Labour hits out at Tories for housing crisis, proposes mandatory mortgage support measures

Labour’s Shadow Housing Secretary, Lisa Nandy, has strongly criticised the ruling Conservative Party for landing a “mortgage bombshell” on homeowners.

Nandy claimed that the Tories had let down prospective homeowners and renters alike and had failed to deliver on housing needs. She argued that too many families saving to buy their first homes felt they were failing to make progress.

“The fact of the matter is that the Tories have inflicted households with a mortgage bombshell, let renters down and failed to build the homes we need,” Nandy stated, attributing a housing crisis to what she termed as the “Tory economic failure.”

She further remarked: “Millions are feeling the pain from this Tory economic failure.”

In response to these issues, the Labour MP outlined her party’s plans to address this crisis. Their proposals include mandatory measures to prevent households from missing out on mortgage support, the extension of rights and protections for renters, and decisive actions to boost housebuilding across the country.

“Labour has a plan to start fixing this crisis. We would stop households missing out on the mortgage support they need by making measures mandatory, we will give greater rights and protections to renters, and we will take the tough choices to get Britain building,” Nandy concluded.
