Propertymark expresses concern over Scottish Conservatives’ economic strategy’s housing omission

Following the unveiling of the Scottish Conservatives’ economic strategy by party leader Douglas Ross, industry body Propertymark has expressed concern over the glaring omission of housing issues from the plan. The organisation criticises the strategy for lacking basic commitments to high-quality, sustainable housing, which it considers a cornerstone for a robust economy.

The strategy, as it stands, omits key details about long-term plans for the construction of affordable homes and how investment will be channelled to meet the demands of a growing population. Furthermore, the speech failed to address the current rent freeze and its impact on investment in quality accommodation, particularly for student and young professional demographics.

Nathan Emerson, CEO of Propertymark, commented: “Propertymark is keen to see firm plans on how housing demand in Scotland should be met over the coming decades. Having a well-rounded plan that provides a comprehensive mix of housing solutions is the most essential foundation stone for any economy to grow and we are keen to see that happen.”

Members of Propertymark have observed a trend where landlords are exiting the private rented sector in Scotland, creating additional concerns over the current housing situation. The organisation is extending an invitation to the Opposition in Scotland to engage in constructive dialogues for developing alternative solutions aimed at fostering a more prosperous housing market.

The lack of focus on housing in the economic strategy was noted as a significant oversight by Propertymark. The organisation is calling for an inclusive discussion involving all stakeholders in the political landscape to ensure that high-quality affordable housing targets are not just set but also rigorously met.
