Half of first-timers will struggle to buy without parents’ help

More than half (53%) of people aged 18 to 44 feel they will not get on the property ladder without financial help from their parents, according to a survey conducted by Martin & Co.

Martin & Co surveyed 500 people in this age bracket and discovered that 43% were relying on help from their parents in buying their first home.

Meanwhile, 17% planned to remain in rented accommodation and did intend to get onto the property ladder at all.

In a separate survey of 500 homeowners,  Martin & Co found that 53% of homeowners would use the equity in their home to help younger relatives get onto the property ladder.

More than a fifth (23%) of homeowners were downsizing from their current property to release equity tied up in their home.
