Rents up 10% in past 12 months for one in five properties – ONS

One in five privately rented properties in England and Wales saw rents rise by 10% or more in the 12 months to September, according to data released by the Office for National Statistics (ONS).

Rental prices rose most in terms of cost in London, and least in the North West; in England, the region with the highest percentage increase was the North West (12.3%) and the lowest was in the South West (7.8%).

Between July and September 2023, rents were marginally more likely to have risen in England (43%) than in Wales (41%).

In both England and Wales, average rental prices increased by 9.7% and 11.3%, respectively, compared with the 8.4% and 10.5% increases recorded in September 2022.

Rental prices rose by more than 10% for 21% of properties in England, and 17% in Wales, compared with 14% and 13% last year.

Flats and maisonettes were more likely to see price increases (72% in England, 44% in Wales) than detached houses (52%, 34%).

In London, more than three-quarters (77%) of privately rented properties saw a price rise, up from 58% in September 2022.
