Cambridge micro-brewery secures £1.1m for expansion

A publican and micro-brewery owner in Cambridge, Marcus Turpin, has recently clinched a £1.1m funding deal with alternative finance lender Reward Finance Group for the acquisition of The Lord Byron Inn in Trumpington. This significant investment is set to propel growth and revitalisation for Turpin Breweries, especially after the downturn caused by the pandemic.

Turpin, who transitioned from building to the pub industry in 2006, has been at the helm of The Lord Byron Inn for over 17 years, expanding its offerings to include hotel accommodation, events, and a restaurant. The establishment of Turpin Breweries in 2014 marked a further expansion, earning multiple awards before the pandemic necessitated a temporary halt.

The funding from Reward, known for its bespoke finance solutions up to £5m for UK SMEs and property investors, will enable the ambitious plans Turpin has for the inn and brewery. Turpin expressed his enthusiasm for the future, highlighting plans to extend hotel services and reestablish the brewery as a key player in the industry.

Adam Jolley, Reward’s business development director in the Midlands, praised the transaction, underscoring the potential for development and expansion at the historic Lord Byron Inn. Becky Hayward, a relationship manager with Reward, also expressed eagerness to support Turpin during this pivotal growth phase.

Turpin shared: “Having enjoyed over 17 years as publican at The Lord Byron Inn, it’s hugely satisfying to now purchase the property and own the business outright. We’ve built up a fantastic team here and have some exciting plans for the future.”

Jolley added: “Marcus and the team have established a hugely successful business and it has been highly rewarding to help them fund this property purchase.”

Hayward noted: “I’m really looking forward to working with Marcus and providing ongoing support during what is such a significant growth period for the business.”
