Renters’ Coalition reacts to “disingenuous” promise from Deputy PM to ban no fault evictions “today”

The Renters’ Reform Coalition, a campaign group of 20 organisations advocating for private renters, has responded to claims made by the deputy PM today, Wednesday 24th April, that no fault evictions will be abolished “today.”

At Prime Minister’s Questions (PMQs), responding to Angela Rayner who asked him to name a date for when no-fault evictions would be abolished, Deputy Prime Minister Oliver Dowden said: “Today. It’s today that we will be voting on it and I am confident that we will deliver on that commitment.”

Tom Darling, campaign manager at the Renters’ Reform Coalition, said: “Michael Gove u-turned this morning to say he couldn’t guarantee the end of no-fault evictions.

“The Deputy Prime Minister Oliver Dowden knows that no-fault evictions won’t be abolished today, so it’s disingenuous for him to say the practice will end today.

“Renters facing these evictions up and down the country tomorrow, who have already been so badly let down by endless delays caused by conservative landlord MPs, don’t deserve to have their hopes artificially raised yet again.”

It comes after Housing Secretary Michael Gove was this morning unable to guarantee no-fault evictions would be abolished by the General Election, reversing a previous position.
