Abolition of FHL regime to impact holiday home hotspots in England and Wales

A new study, utilising data from the Office for National Statistics (ONS), identifies the areas in England and Wales with the highest density of holiday homes, just as the Government announces plans to abolish the furnished holiday lettings (FHL) regime.

Isles of Scilly tops the list as the location with the highest proportion of holiday homes relative to its total dwellings, showcasing a significant 5% of properties used for holiday lets.

Following the Isles of Scilly, South Hams and Gwynedd are also prominent areas with high densities of holiday homes, highlighting the appeal of these locations to property owners and holidaymakers alike.

The study, conducted by Howden Insurance, further ranks North Norfolk, Isle of Anglesey, and South Lakeland among the top areas for holiday home density in the region.

The findings indicate significant potential impacts due to the upcoming legislative changes affecting holiday let owners and users.

A spokesperson from Howden Insurance commented on the implications: “These insights highlight the popularity of holiday home ownership across England and Wales and identify the areas where current property owners would benefit from letting their home out this holiday season.”

“The data also reflects the growing interest in holiday home rentals, offering families and individuals diverse accommodation options. Findings like these not only shed light on housing patterns but also offer valuable information for prospective holidaymakers seeking varied accommodation choices.”
