Labour urged to prioritise housing policy as Starmer set for Downing Street

As the Labour Party prepares for a term in Downing Street, housing policy must be a top priority, according to Propertymark.

The trade body said it is crucial for the incoming Government to focus on housing from day one. Over the next ten years, the UK population is expected to reach around 70 million, requiring long-term strategic planning to ensure a sustainable housing supply.

Propertymark supports Labour’s plan to build 1.5 million new homes in the next parliamentary term but stresses the need for careful use of available land and protection of greenbelt areas. A ‘community first’ approach should be taken in all strategic planning to improve chosen areas.

All manifesto promises must be transparent and include a deliverable timeline. Pledges must be fair and practical, with clear information on how housing investment will be supported.

Different demographics need to be considered in the housing mix. Propertymark wants detailed plans to assist first-time buyers, addressing affordability issues. Any schemes to help people purchase homes would be a positive step.

Plans for the wider housing market and rental sector are also needed. Input from stakeholders and a long-term strategy that benefits future generations should be a focus.

Nathan Emerson, CEO of Propertymark, said: “Propertymark welcomes wide-ranging engagement with the new Labour government to help steer an objective pathway forward for the housing sector. We have seen a chronic undersupply of affordable new housing for many years.

“Sustainable housing is the foundation for any strong economy and there must be clear and well-thought-out plans that inspire investment and improve supply moving forward. We want to see long-term cross-party cooperation that delivers the right kind of homes in areas where they are desperately needed.”
