Rachel Reeves becomes first female Chancellor while Angela Rayner appointed Deputy Prime Minister and Housing Secretary

Rachel Reeves and Angela Rayner have been confirmed as the first two members of the Cabinet of new Prime Minister Keir Starmer.

Reeves becomes the UK’s first female Chancellor and replaces former Tory Chancellor Jeremy Hunt who managed to hang on to his seat in the election.

She has been the Member of Parliament for Leeds West since 2010 and studied at New College, Oxford, and the London School of Economics before working at the Bank of England and then HBOS.

She previously held the Shadow Chancellorship under Starmer having taken up the role in May 2021.

Meanwhile, Angela Rayner has been confirmed as Deputy Prime Minister in Starmer’s cabinet. In addition to this role, she will serve as the Secretary of State for Levelling Up, Housing and Communities.

The housing brief was held in Rishi Sunak’s Cabinet by Michael Gove with Rayner acting as his opposite number in the Shadow Cabinet.

Rayner has been the Deputy Leader of the Labour Party since 2020 and has represented Ashton-under-Lyne as a MP since 2015.
