Gavin and Stacey home named most affordable Christmas TV property

The iconic terraced home from Gavin and Stacey has been crowned the most affordable Christmas TV property, with average monthly mortgage repayments costing just £1,011—some £21,000 less than Kevin McCallister’s sprawling Chicago mansion from Home Alone.

Research by mortgage adviser Alexander Hall analysed 10 famous Christmas TV properties, estimating their current market value and average monthly mortgage repayments based on a 15% deposit.

A home inspired by Stacey’s house in Barry, South Wales, costs an average of £224,612. With a 15% deposit of £33,692, buyers would need a mortgage of £190,920, equating to manageable monthly repayments for many.

This affordability contrasts sharply with Home Alone’s Winnetka, Illinois house, valued at £4.116m. A 15% deposit of £617,511 would still leave buyers facing daunting repayments of £22,460 per month.

The second most affordable TV home is Del Boy and Rodney Trotter’s flat in Peckham from Only Fools and Horses. A typical property in this area costs £439,722, leading to average monthly mortgage repayments of £1,979.

Meanwhile, a semi-detached home in Bracknell, like the Dursleys’ house from Harry Potter, requires repayments of £2,025, making it the third most affordable on the list.

At the other end of the spectrum, Edina Monsoon’s townhouse from Absolutely Fabulous is among the priciest properties, valued at £4.6m. Despite the higher value, more favourable UK mortgage rates result in monthly repayments of £21,000—slightly less than the Home Alone house.

Stephanie Daley, director of partnerships at Alexander Hall, said: “Christmas wouldn’t be the same without the classic entertainment that graces our screens, and the properties in these shows are as iconic as the characters.

“This year, excitement for the final ever episode of Gavin and Stacey is immense. For fans who want to hold onto that magic, the good news is Stacey’s home in South Wales is not only charming but also highly affordable, making a move to Barry a realistic goal for many buyers.”
