Research by Co-op Insurance found that almost three in 10 (29%) homeowners have experienced home burglaries, rising to almost two-fifths (37%) in the North West of England.
Vehicle theft from homes affected over one in six (18%), with vehicle keys being highly valued alongside personal documents, sentimental items, and wallets.
The top items homeowners aimed to protect from theft included personal documents, vehicles or vehicle keys, sentimental items, purses or wallets, smartphones, jewellery, TVs, game consoles, bikes or sports gear, and clothing.
More than half of homeowners (54%) installed security cameras, and 92% reported feeling more secure as a result.
Among those without cameras, more than three in five (62%) believed they would feel safer with one.
Co-op Insurance highlighted that theft claims reached almost £85,000 in 2024, stressing the importance of having proper insurance coverage to avoid financial impact.
Graham Ward-Lush, head of home at Co-op Insurance, said: “During the winter months, many people see their home as a sanctuary that allows them to escape the dark and cold weather.
“However, our research suggests that a significant number of Brits don’t feel as secure in their homes when the dark evenings set in, but that most people would feel less anxious with extra security features.
“Whether it’s leaving lights on a timer, installing a security camera or simply making sure your windows and doors are locked, we’re encouraging homeowners to take extra steps to ensure that their possessions are kept safe, and homes remain secure this winter.”
