Alps launches pet damage protection ahead of Renters’ Rights Bill

Alps has introduced a pet damage protection policy called ‘Not for Lions’ for landlords.

This policy is part of the firm’s response to the upcoming Renters’ Rights Bill, expected to receive royal assent in spring 2025.

The bill will give tenants greater rights to keep pets in rental properties, which could limit landlords’ ability to refuse such requests.

Under the reforms, landlords can require tenants to either obtain pet damage cover or reimburse the cost of insurance purchased by the landlord.

The ‘Not for Lions’ policy, developed with Addept Insurance and supported by The Salvation Army General Insurance Corporation (Sagic), offers cover for pet damage up to £5,000 per period of insurance for as little as £120.00 plus Insurance Premium Tax (IPT).

Michelle O’Reilly, managing director at Alps, said: “This is a fantastic addition to our broad range of add-on policies.

“We’re delighted to be working with Addept Insurance to bring this responsive cover to market at a time when landlords are facing increasing uncertainty.

“It’s an important product for landlords, providing protection and peace of mind at a level affordable to most tenants.”

Richard Finan, managing director at Addept Insurance, said: “Alps shares our commitment to providing innovative add-on solutions that exceed customer expectations both in terms of value and service.

“We are delighted to partner with them, ahead of the implementation of the new Renters’ Rights Bill, to bring this exciting new product to market addressing the current protection gap for landlords in accessing dedicated pet damage cover at a cost that is affordable to tenants.”
