Aberdeen was named as the most affordable city for singles looking to buy a home in Great Britain, research from Zoopla has revealed.

Research found that buyers in Aberdeen pay an average of £510 per month for mortgage payments on a one or two-bedroom property, based on an average home value of £119,350.

This accounts for 16% of the average monthly salary of £3,280.

Liverpool followed as the most affordable city for singles in England, with average mortgage payments of £540, representing 18% of average monthly earnings of £2,980 for a one-bedroom or two-bedroom home valued at £130,800.

Other affordable cities included Glasgow and Sheffield, with average homes priced at £152,270 and £156,990 respectively, requiring 21% and 20% of monthly salaries for mortgage payments.

In Southern England, house prices have risen by just under 1.5% over the last year, which is lower than the 5.6% growth in earnings.

This has led to improved affordability in cities such as Bristol and Oxford, where property values sat at £302,570 and £364,430 respectively.

In London, even the most affordable boroughs recorded mortgage payments exceeding £1,000 for one-bedroom or two-bedroom homes.

Havering had the lowest average property values at £306,480, leading to monthly payments of £1,090.

Croydon followed closely with average values of £313,580, resulting in monthly payments of £1,120.

Daniel Copley, consumer expert at Zoopla, said: “For singletons, buying a first home can feel a little bit like dating and just like dating, first impressions matter.

“However, it’s important to dig deep into your potential new home as it’s what’s below the surface that determines long-term compatibility.

“Take your time and do your research before making that ultimate commitment to swipe right on a home.”
