Consumer research conducted by Countrywide Surveying Services (CSS) and Pegasus Insight has found that 88% of buyers who used a home condition survey would do so again, with 92% saying it provided them with peace of mind.
The study also revealed that 60% of home condition surveys identified previously unknown property issues, helping buyers avoid unexpected costs and post-purchase complications.
Concerns that detailed surveys might delay transactions or trigger renegotiations were not supported by the data. Only 9% of buyers received a valuation below the agreed purchase price, and just 2% withdrew from the purchase after receiving their survey. The findings indicate that home condition surveys enhance buyer confidence rather than disrupt transactions.
The research also highlighted a knowledge gap among first-time buyers, with 73% lacking confidence in navigating the homebuying process. This underscores the role of home condition surveys in equipping buyers with critical information to make informed decisions.
Matthew Cumber, managing director at Countrywide Surveying Services, said: “This research reinforces the immense value of home condition surveys in the homebuying journey. With 88% of buyers saying they would use a survey again and 92% finding peace of mind in the process, it’s evident that these assessments are essential for making more assured and substantiated decisions.
Beyond identifying hidden property issues, home condition surveys provide buyers with confidence while supporting a more transparent and stable property market. Dispelling concerns about transaction delays, the data shows that home condition surveys are a tool for reassurance, not disruption.”
Cumber added that distinguishing between a lender’s valuation and a home condition survey is key to helping buyers avoid costly mistakes. “Helping clients understand the distinction between a lender’s valuation and a home condition survey is key to preventing costly mistakes, building trust, and delivering positive customer outcomes.
“By proactively recommending and explaining the importance of home condition surveys, brokers can strengthen their advisory role and offer a more transparent, client-centric service. This approach benefits all stakeholders in the homebuying process, ensuring buyers receive the support, upfront information, and expert guidance needed to navigate an increasingly complex and fast-moving property market.”
