Over one in five private landlords in Scotland struggled to keep up with changes to the law, research from the SafeDeposits Scotland Charitable Trust found.
Research revealed that just over half (51%) of landlords said they could keep up with legal changes, while 21% said they found it difficult.
Two out of five (39%) landlords said legal changes were not being clearly explained, while less than a third (28%) thought legal changes were clearly communicated.
Additionally, previous research by the Charitable Trust found just one in five (19%) private renters in Scotland had heard of and understood the bill.
Dr Jennifer Harris, head of policy at SafeDeposits Scotland, said: “Ensuring landlords and tenants fully understand their legal rights and obligations should be at the heart of a healthy rental market.
“It is therefore concerning that so many are struggling to keep up to speed.
“Work is clearly needed to improve the way changes to the sector are communicated to ensure all landlords know what is expected of them, and tenants understand, and can enforce, their rights.”
