The Exeter paid out £61m in claims in 2024, with £41.8m going to health insurance claims and £17.7m to income protection (IP) and life insurance, including terminal illness.

The insurer paid 90% of new private health insurance claims, with most claims for musculoskeletal and connective tissue disorders.

Claims not paid were mainly due to being made during the policy moratorium period.

The average age for claims on the Income First product was 38.

The average claim lasted 76 weeks for full-term policies and 75 weeks for limited benefit policies.

Most IP claims were for musculoskeletal conditions, followed by mental health and hip or knee conditions.

All life insurance and terminal illness claims were paid in 2024, with £5.2m paid out.

The average age at claim was 57 for life insurance and 56 for terminal illness.

Isobel Langton, CEO at The Exeter, said: “No one wants to be in a position where they need to make an insurance claim – especially when the claim is due to ill health, injury, or the loss of a loved one.

“Our latest claims figures highlight the valuable peace of mind that insurance can provide and also reflects our ongoing commitment to supporting our members when they most need us.”
