The Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS) has launched a public consultation on proposed updates to the RICS Home survey standard, which provides the definitive framework for residential property surveys in the UK.
First published in 2019 and implemented in 2021, the Home survey standard was introduced to ensure consistency, raise standards and improve consumer confidence in the survey market.
It set out a clear framework for RICS members and regulated firms, aligned with consumer expectations and sector needs.
As part of a review to ensure the standard remains fit for purpose, RICS gathered views from more than 325 professionals and surveyed over 1,400 homeowners to capture consumer perspectives.
Feedback from both groups has shaped the draft updated standard now being consulted on. A separate consultation will also consider a possible home survey regulation scheme, though this will remain distinct from the updated standard.
The consultations, which open today and run for six weeks, will inform the final version of the standard before it is reviewed by RICS’s Knowledge and Practice Committee and the Standards and Regulation Board.
Gary Epps, chair of the expert group, said: “The RICS Home survey standard is a key document underpinning consumer confidence and professional practice in the residential market.
“Since its introduction, it has helped ensure consistency and clarity in home surveys across the UK.
“This update reflects our commitment to maintaining best practice, adapting to market developments, and listening to the views of members and consumers alike.
“We encourage all stakeholders to engage with the consultation and help shape the future of home surveying.”
