Barnett Waddingham achieves carbon neutrality and boosts charity support

Barnett Waddingham has published its Impact Report for 2024/25, showing a year of progress in community investment and sustainability.

The firm donated £135,000 to charity, covering homelessness prevention and youth development.

Major donations included £15,000 to the Trussell Trust for food security and emergency assistance, and £10,000 to Crisis to support people out of homelessness.

Employees volunteered 1,520 hours, a 48% increase from the previous year, supporting over 400 young people through mentoring and educational programmes.

Barnett Waddingham reached carbon neutrality across scopes 1 and 2 emissions for 2023/24, offsetting 1,050 tonnes of CO₂e through certified global climate projects.

The business planted over 7,000 trees and achieved 100% landfill diversion across all offices.

It recycled 187kg of IT equipment and donated 250 items of office furniture for reuse.

All offices ran on 100% renewable energy and employee-led schemes resulted in the planting of 5,700 mangrove trees.

Partnerships included Hubbub, Groundwork, the Woodland Trust and the Soil Association.

The firm supported biodiversity, waste reduction, and launched an electric car leasing scheme for staff.

As part of its 35th anniversary, Barnett Waddingham funded a £10,000 careers fair with UpReach for students from disadvantaged backgrounds, planted hundreds of trees across the UK, and provided extra support for local Trussell Trust foodbanks.

Michelle Robertson, head of central operations at Barnett Waddingham, said: “At BW, we are committed to delivering positive impact through our Corporate Social Investments, driven by collaboration, innovation, and purposeful action.

“These achievements reflect our core purpose of empowering people to secure better futures.”

Melanie Durrant, lead sustainability partner, said: “Looking to achieve carbon neutrality on our Scope 1 and 2 emissions while expanding our community support demonstrates that environmental and social responsibility go hand in hand.

“Our partnerships and initiatives show that small actions, ranging from reducing waste to planting trees, create lasting impact.

“Following our integration with Howden, for the first time we have been able to measure a range of Scope 3 emissions which we are looking to offset this year, and we look forward to advancing our sustainability strategy and measuring a broader range of emissions.”
