NHBC launches trainee scheme to boost construction skills and diversity

The National House Building Council (NHBC) has started its trainee recruitment drive, with plans to hire up to 30 people for roles in building inspection, surveying, technical consulting and quality analysis.

This move comes as the industry tries to tackle a shortage of skilled workers and backs the Government’s target of 1.5 million new homes this Parliament.

The roles are open to applicants of all ages and backgrounds to help increase diversity in house building, and differ in length, duties and entry requirements.

The company is looking for 15 trainee building inspectors, four trainee technical building consultants and four trainee construction quality analysts.

Up to six trainee building surveyors will begin a four-year, fully funded degree apprenticeship at the University of Wolverhampton, leading to a BSc (Hons) in Building Control and chartered body membership.

NHBC has also invested £100m into 12 multi-skill training hubs nationwide, supporting up to 3,000 apprenticeships each year.

Paul Turner, CEO at NHBC, said: “Our main priority as a business is to contribute to getting more great-quality homes built quickly, safely and skilfully all over the country.

“The trainees who seize this chance to learn from our industry-leading experts within an inclusive working environment will bring their talents and enthusiasm to bear right away.

“We’re proud to not only work with our customers to improve quality standards, but also to take direct action like this to tackle the challenges they face.”

Josh Golding, training manager at NHBC, said: “We cannot wait to build successful long-term careers with our new trainees.

“Whether you are entering work for the first time or want to switch from an entirely different career, these roles offer a perfect entry to the construction industry.

“Our focus on mentoring, training and professional development means trainees can achieve recognised qualifications and progress through four specialist career pathways that will take them as far as they want to go.”
