Data from Emperor Paint has shown that Birmingham has the highest number of people searching for mould removal in the UK, with 510 searches a month.
Manchester ranked second with 240 searches, while Bristol and Glasgow tied for third with 200 each.
Leeds followed with 190 monthly searches.
Emperor Paint advised that to tackle mould, homeowners should check for all sources of moisture inside and outside the home.
Outside, this means looking for damage to exterior walls, peeling paint, cracks, damaged gutters or leaky window seals, as these can allow water in and cause penetrating damp.
Inside, common signs include water droplets on windows, damp patches on cold internal walls and mould behind furniture, which can be caused by condensation.
The company also said that homes that are not heated enough are more likely to have condensation, as cold walls attract moisture.
Additionally, Emperor Paint recommended keeping both external and internal walls dry to help protect the home from damp and mould and make it easier to heat.
They also advised that everyday activities like cooking and drying clothes release moisture into the air.
