The New Homes Quality Board (NHQB) has been appointed as Code Operator for the Shared Ownership Code.
The Code was created by the Shared Ownership Council and piloted with eight registered housing providers.
The Shared Ownership Code is aimed at supporting customers throughout the homebuying process and improving standards among providers.
NHQB was selected as the Code Operator due to its proven governance, infrastructure, and experience in administering the New Homes Quality Code (NHQC), which already covers 56% of all new-build homes in the UK for private sale.
To manage this, NHQB has set up a dedicated subsidiary with its own board.
Ann Santry, who chaired the Shared Ownership Council, will serve as chair of the Shared Ownership Code for three months and will also join the NHQB board for that period.
Bernie Conroy, an industry consultant who co-led the pilot, will also support for three months.
NHQB is hiring new staff with sector experience to help run the Code.
Advisory panels will be formed to keep housing providers, consumers, and other key groups involved.
Santry said: “We are confident that the Code will be in safe and capable hands with NHQB.
“Our shared values, combined with their experience, infrastructure, and governance, will ensure effective implementation and better outcomes for current and future shared owners.
“I look forward to working with NHQB over the next few months to support the transition and to encourage more providers to adopt the Code.”
Emma Toms, CEO of NHQB, said: “Our top priority is ensuring a smooth transition that builds confidence among providers and delivers the protection shared owners rightly deserve.
“NHQB brings a strong track record and deep expertise from implementing the New Homes Quality Code, which already covers more than 56% of all new build private homes across Britain.
“We are excited to apply this experience to the Shared Ownership Code, helping to raise standards and ensure shared homeowners benefit from the same high levels of quality and protection.”
Toms added: “With our support, we are confident the sector can improve housing quality, customer care, and satisfaction.”
