Muse backed a new research project looking at purpose-driven development to tackle the UK’s housing crisis.
The work was set up by ReGenerate and the Quality of Life Foundation, led by Sadie Morgan, and funded by Landsec, The Crown Estate, Muse and HGG London.
The research looked at purpose-driven development, which aims to deliver positive outcomes for people and the planet alongside profit.
It offers an alternative to standard housebuilding, as the Government aimed to build 1.5 million new homes by 2029.
ReGenerate focused on policy barriers and recommendations, using its experience in bringing together business and Government.
The Quality of Life Foundation contributed knowledge of communities and health, making sure residents’ experiences shaped the findings.
Phil Mayall, managing director at Muse, said: “Muse is pleased to be supporting this important research project, we are supporting phase 2 which will include two roundtables and a series of case studies.
“The first roundtable will identify barriers the sector faces, while the second will focus on developing solutions – both government-led and business-led, that could be unlocked to help tackle the housing crisis.
“As the government continues to push ahead with its ambitious housing targets, it is critical that we are delivering the right type of homes, in the right places, and which are built for the future.”
Mayall added: “As an organisation, we make this a priority. Working in partnership, we are committed to delivering quality homes as part of meaningful placemaking that transforms whole areas.”
“We’re proud to be backers of research that will help government and policymakers to further understand what makes transformative, housing-led development economically possible, socially impactful, and sustainable.
“It is through this type of impactful study and the findings it can offer that we will be able to work best together – to positively shape communities and neighbourhoods up and down the country in the years to come.”
Esmé Clifford, policy director at ReGenerate, said: “We are excited to embark on this crucial research.
“By working hand-in-hand with developers to understand how they are adopting purpose-driven approaches, we aim to provide the government with clear, actionable strategies to deliver the safe and decent homes the UK so desperately needs.”
Emma Cooke, head of external affairs at the Quality of Life Foundation, said: “Our goal is to ensure that policy recommendations are firmly rooted in real-world experiences and lead to tangible improvements in people’s lives.”
“This project represents a significant step towards creating homes and neighbourhoods that genuinely foster health and wellbeing.”
