Scott Thorpe (pictured, left), founder and CEO of TMG Mortgage Network, and Phil Smith (pictured, right), non-executive chair of Fintel plc, are providing backing to Rotherham United Women Football Club (RUWFC).
The club was set to fold due to financial uncertainty.
Both Thorpe and Smith provided the backing, leadership and structure needed to stabilise the club and target growth.
The immediate aim is to compete for back-to-back promotions.
The longer-term target is to build a pathway capable of taking Rotherham United Women towards the Women’s Super League within five years.
The club will focus on football development, female participation, schools engagement, business support and financial education.
Smith said: “Rotherham United Women is an important club with real history and community value.
“It needed urgent support and Scott and I felt we were in a position to help.
“The first job is stability, but the ambition is much bigger than survival.”
Smith added: “We want to build a serious, well-run football club that the town, local businesses and the financial services sector can be proud to support.”
Thorpe said: “This club was close to being lost, and that could not happen. Phil and I are both Rotherham lads, we have both built our careers in financial services, and we both know what this club can mean for the town.
“This is about backing women’s football properly, building a pathway for girls and young women, and giving Rotherham something ambitious to get behind.
“We want back-to-back promotions and we want to chase the WSL within five years. That is the standard we are setting.”
The immediate priority is to stabilise the club, support players and staff, strengthen governance, improve commercial partnerships and create a stronger platform for matchday growth and media exposure.
Further work will focus on building links with schools, grassroots football, families and the business community.
