The number of customers aged 65-74 using BNPL rose 46% year-on-year, while use among people aged 75 and over increased by 53%.
Buy Now Pay Later (BNPL) use continued to rise across the UK, with over 100 million transactions carried out through the payment option in 2025, worth more than £7bn, according to research from Experian.
Of this, 98.5% of balances were repaid on time.
From 15th July, the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) will start regulating BNPL for the first time.
The rules will include clearer information for customers, affordability checks and support for anyone who gets into difficulty with repayments.
Experian found average transaction values stayed at around £60, meaning people mostly used BNPL for everyday purchases.
In March 2026, there were more than nine million transactions recorded across nearly four million customers, worth £621m.
People aged 25-34 made up the biggest user group, but there was strong growth among older people.
The number of customers aged 65-74 using BNPL rose 46% year-on-year, while use among people aged 75 and over increased by 53%.
John Webb, head of consumer affairs at Experian UK&I, said: “It’s clear people of all ages have enjoyed the convenience of BNPL, helping them manage their monthly budgets effectively and without getting into difficulty.
“As with all forms of borrowing, it’s important to be aware of the commitments you’re taking on and keep a close eye on what your repayments will be.
“And remember that each time you open a new BNPL account, it will appear on your credit report, which lenders may consider when you apply for new borrowing, such as a loan, credit card or mortgage.”
