TVs, laptops and phones were the top home insurance claims made by renters, figures from Tesco Insurance showed.
TVs made up 16.47% of claims, followed by accidental loss at 15.08%, laptops at 10.44%, theft at 9.98% and phones at 7.89%.
The average renter claim reached £1,423, despite the average annual premium coming in at £92.28, or less than £8 a month.
Homeowners were most likely to claim for structural issues.
Escape of water accounted for 27.48% of claims, then accidental loss at 10.27%, underground pipe damage at 7.79%, theft at 6.88% and storm damage at 6.34%.
The average homeowner claim was £3,747, mainly due to higher costs for structural work.
The highest payouts came from fire, with the average claim at £23,300 for homeowners and £9,031 for renters.
Flooding was next, with average payouts of £18,354 for homeowners and £4,986 for renters.
Alex Cross, chief customer officer at Tesco Insurance, said: “Our claims data shows that many renters aren’t claiming for expensive luxury items, but the everyday essentials they rely on most.
“Replacing several everyday essentials like a TV and laptop after a theft, fire or accident can quickly become very expensive.
“That’s why it’s important for renters to take stock of everything they own and consider the true cost of replacing those belongings if the unexpected were to happen.”
Cross added: “Contents insurance offers reassurance that, should something go wrong, you’re protected against the financial impact of replacing the possessions you use every day.
“With contents insurance costing less than £8 a month on average, it’s worth checking you have the right level of cover for everything in your home.”
