Outgoing Prime Minister Boris Johnson has named Greg Clark as the replacement for Michael Gove as Secretary of State for Housing, Communities and Local Government.
Clark has been chair of the Science and Technology Select Committee since 2020 and is the Member of Parliament for Tunbridge Wells.
Clark served in the Conservative/LibDem coalition as Minister of State in the Department for Communities and Local Government from 2010 to 2012.
He was also Financial Secretary to the Treasury from 2012 to 2013.
Nathan Emerson, Propertymark CEO said of the appointment: ”We have previously met Greg Clark when he held the equivalent position in what was DCLG.
“The hope from having someone with this experience is that he will be able to maintain momentum on important issues such as renters reform, leasehold, building and fire safety requirements and regulation standards amongst property professionals.”
Clark replaces Gove, who was sacked yesterday in spectacular style by the Prime Minister after he advised him that he should step down.
Cabinet members also joined calls for the Prime Minister to go with reports of Priti Patel and former Housing Minister Grant Shapps both advising the Prime Minister to leave.
Yesterday saw a slew of resignations which continued this morning. Earlier today it was then confirmed that Johnson would resign the leadership.
Johnson is hoping to remain in a caretaker role until Autumn while a new PM is selected. However, debate is raging about his future both within the Conservative party and wider parliament.
Gove was a leadership contender alongside Johnson in 2019 and it could be expected that he would throw his hat in the ring again.
However, he is tipped as an outsider at present by bookmakers who see former Chancellor Rishi Sunak as a likely replacement for Johnson.
Neither politician has thrown their hat in the ring for the job as of yet.
