Jeremy Hunt will remain in his position as Chancellor of the Exchequer under Rishi Sunak’s premiership, it has been confirmed
Hunt was appointed as Chancellor on the 14th of October following ex PM Liz Truss’ decision to sack Kwasi Kwarteng in the face of widespread backlash from their calamitous ‘mini budget’.
Since assuming the role, Hunt has reversed many of the fiscal plans set out by Kwarteng, including the two-year energy bill freeze and the planned cuts to income tax, and has seen volatile UK markets begin to show signs of calm under his tenure.
Amidst Sunak’s bid to be Prime Minister, and now his ongoing cabinet reshuffle, Hunt has publicly voiced his support for the new PM, describing him as “someone who, in our best traditions, will turn the page on what went wrong, take decisions in the national interest and rebuild the extraordinary potential of our economy.”
The announcement of his continued tenure comes as Sunak steps into his new leadership role, vowing to unite and rebuild credibility for the fractious Tory party by stating he is “looking to build a cabinet of all talents”.
