Ben Thompson, the Deputy CEO of Mortgage Advice Bureau (MAB), has expressed his disappointment at the lack of policies targeting the energy efficiency of homes in Britain, in the Spring Budget announcement on Wednesday.
Thompson highlighted the importance of reducing carbon emissions from homes, which currently account for around 20% of the UK’s total emissions.
And he called for more tax relief and incentives to be directed towards making properties more eco-friendly, especially in light of the Net Zero targets currently in place.
He added: “It was discouraging to not see more tax relief and incentives directed towards making properties more eco-friendly.
“There is a need to ensure the homes being built now stand the test of time when it comes to energy performance and carbon emissions. Â
“The lack of announcements directed toward landlords, who’re under pressure to retrofit their properties to a minimum of grade C, was also notable.
“Without schemes in place to promote and incentivise landlords to retrofit their properties, we could face the prospect of them selling up placing yet more strain on an already stretched rental market.
“The country also faces the prospect of older properties not being upgraded, continuing to emit large amounts of carbon.”Â
