UK homes among smallest globally despite having the highest price tags, research shows

Despite UK homeowners paying some of the highest property prices worldwide, a study by digital home information pack provider, Moverly, has revealed that the average size of a UK home is among the smallest globally, only exceeding homes in China, Russia, and India.

Moverly’s study involved analysing the average house size across 19 nations, revealing that the average UK property is a modest 818 sq ft. The only countries with smaller average home sizes were China (646 sq ft), Russia (614 sq ft), and India (504 sq ft).

On the other end of the spectrum, Australia boasts the largest average homes, a whopping 182% larger than the UK, with an average size of 2,303 sq ft. New Zealand, the United States, and Canada also enjoy considerably larger homes than the UK, with average sizes ranging from 138% to 166% larger.

Within Europe, Denmark leads the pack with the largest average home size of 1,475 sq ft, followed by Greece (1,356 sq ft), and Belgium (1,293 sq ft). Even the Netherlands, France, Germany, and Spain boast average home sizes larger than the UK, ranging from 28% to 54% larger.

However, the size discrepancy is not the only area where the UK lags behind. The average price per square foot in the UK is a steep £351, significantly higher than property prices in countries such as Germany (£236), Canada (£218), France (£212), Australia (£208), Spain (£141), and the United States (£126).

Commenting on the findings, Moverly co-founder Ed Molyneux said: “Housing delivery and just where to build is a hot topic in the UK, and with space being such a valuable commodity, UK homes rank as some of the smallest when compared to many other global nations.”

He added: “Despite this, the UK remains home to one of the most valuable bricks and mortar property markets in the world, and those looking to climb the ladder will pay considerably more when compared to many other foreign countries.”
