The National Residential Landlords Association (NRLA) has welcomed the Labour Party’s latest statement regarding rent controls.
Following an initial pledge by Labour to control rising rental costs if it wins the next General Election, Shadow Housing Secretary Lisa Nandy came out against rent control or rent freezing measures.
Speaking at a conference, Nandy rejected proposed rent controls, saying they would only worsen the ongoing crisis, and could even lead to higher rates of homelessness.
Ben Beadle, chief executive of the NRLA, said: “We agree with Labour that rent controls would do nothing to address the rental supply crisis that tenants across the country now face.
“What renters need is a proper plan to boost the supply of homes for private rent alongside all other tenures.
“Housing benefit rates should also be unfrozen without delay to support vulnerable tenants who are struggling to access the rental market.”
Nandy previously commented on the Government’s mortgage lender charter, stating that these measures should be made mandatory in order to have the desired effects for struggling mortgage borrowers.
