LV= calls for homeowner caution following spike in claims on sunny days

LV= General Insurance (LV= GI) has warned homeowners to keep an eye out for potential summer fire hazards in their homes and gardens, following a spike in claims due to intense heat during the summer months and years.

Data showed that fire claims caused by the sun increased by 233% in 2022 compared with 2021.

The average cost of these claims was around £34,203, with some homes being completely gutted as a result.

Claims the insurer settled last year that involved reflective materials included: a doubled sided mirror left on the windowsill, which scorched the frame, ignited the curtains and caused £11,000 worth of damage, and a garden mirror reflected the rays of the sun and scorched patio doors, costing £3,000.

LV= also saw heath and wildfires rise last year, with homes near open spaces at risk of damage.

Martin Milliner, claims director at LV= General Insurance, said: “As the warmer weather and heatwaves become more frequent, we face an increased risk of home and garden fires, and homeowners should keep an eye out for potential causes.

“Even the tiniest of things can cause significant damage with claims often running into the thousands, so small checks such as making sure there are no mirrors in the direct line of sunlight will make a huge difference, as many unsuspecting items can create a fire.”
