Activists from the Greater Manchester Tenants Union (GMTU) are staging a demonstration today outside an event where Housing Secretary Michael Gove MP is in attendance.
The protest aims to highlight the Conservative Party’s failure to fulfil its 2019 manifesto commitment to end ‘no-fault’ evictions.
The demonstration comes at a time of uncertainty surrounding the Renters (Reform) Bill, legislation designed to provide better protections for renters.
A recent Financial Times report suggests that the bill is being stalled, reportedly because several landlords within the Government Whips Office are refusing to allow the legislation to proceed to a Second Reading in Parliament.
The campaign group 38 Degrees has released research indicating that 20% of Conservative MPs are landlords.
The GMTU is demanding that these MPs set aside any financial interests they may have and adhere to the commitments on which they were elected in the 2019 manifesto.
