Victorian homes top the list of most searched period properties in the UK

Victorian homes have emerged as the most popular period property style in the UK, according to new data from Rightmove.

The property website’s Keyword Sort tool shows significant interest in ‘character’ and ‘period’ homes, with Victorian architecture leading the trend.

This interest is bolstered by the charm portrayed in period dramas like “Downton Abbey” and “Bridgerton.”

Tim Bannister, property expert at Rightmove, said: “Home hunters continue to be captivated by the character and charm of properties that we see in period dramas.

“Victorian homes remain particularly popular, characterised by their historic charm, solid construction, and spacious interiors.

“You’ll often find Victorian houses in some of the most desirable locations which include convenient access to schools and transport links.”

Matt Thompson, head of sales at Chestertons, said: “London’s property market boasts a great number of Georgian, Victorian and Edwardian houses with each architectural style having its own fanbase.

“It is worth noting that, post-pandemic, we did see a slight spike in interest for Georgian properties as buyers were driven to find a house style that has a reputation for being more spacious and could accommodate a home office more easily.

“Still, as demand for properties in the capital outstrips supply, all architectural styles continue to attract buyer interest and offers.”

Meanwhile, Robert McLaughlin, sales director of North and Central London at KFH, highlighted the enduring demand for Victorian properties, stating: “From small, terraced houses to grand villas, Victorian properties have an abundance of character details that remain popular and in demand with today’s buyers.

“If we are lucky enough to market a Victorian home, demand from buyers is high as their charm never really seems to go out of fashion.”

Michael Holden, president of NAEA Propertymark, advised potential buyers of historic homes: “While many British consumers cherish houses with history and character to them, it is vital that consumers remain aware of many of the challenges that come with older properties, whether that concerns an older property’s roofing or windows.

“That is why it is vital that consumers seek out a Propertymark-certified estate agent when opting to buy a historic property, because you know that they will ensure that people are aware of the advantages and disadvantages that come with historic properties and help them come to an informed choice, so that people can purchase their dream home and deal with any downsides regarding historic properties head on.”
