Following a landslide Labour victory, Sir Keir Starmer has addressed the public for the first time as Prime Minister (PM), following his appointment by His Majesty the King.
Vowing to “move forward together” as a nation, Starmer thanked former PM Rishi Sunak for his service to the country, before setting out his goals for the Labour Government.
Noting his belief in stability and moderation, the PM branded Labour as a party of public service.
He said: “We can start with the simple acknowledgement that public service is a privilege.
“Whether you voted Labour or not […] I say to you directly that my Government will serve you.
“We changed the Labour party, and returned it to service.”
Acknowledging current domestic, economic and geopolitical struggles, Starmer also set out his “mission of national renewal.”
He added: “For too long we’ve turned a blind eye to those slipping into insecurity.
“The work of change begins immediately […] brick by brick we will rebuild the infrastructure of opportunity.”
Citing his clear mandate from the British public, Starmer stood firm on the promises he made on behalf of the party during the election campaign, stating that he would endeavour to bolster the NHS, build more affordable housing and bring stability back to the economy.
He concluded: “With respect and humility I invite you all to join this Government of service, in the mission of national renewal.
“Our work is urgent and we begin it today.”
