Starmer groups planning reform, building targets and end of Section 21 under vision for “politics of service”

Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer, speaking at the Labour Party Conference in Liverpool today (24th September), outlined the Government’s wide-reaching measures to “brick by brick, build a new home… a nation rebalanced” as part of an approach to redefining “politics of service.”

Under the umbrella of the “country first, party second” slogan, Starmer noted the changes made to Labour in order to win the General Election, and condemned those wanting a return to the “old ways” of politics for personal gain.

Under this vision, Starmer included support for working people, the Hillsborough Law, and foreign policy, as well as points specifically relevant to the housing and rental markets, such as planning reform, ambitious building targets, and the end of Section 21 no-fault evictions.

He said: “Great forces demand a decisive Government, prepared to face the future.”

Starmer pointed to Labour’s plans for planning reform and ‘planning passports’ as part of its approach to providing housing stock in order to support veterans, young care leavers and others at risk of homelessness, such as victims of domestic abuse.

He added: “If we want homeownership to be a reality for our children, every community has to contribute.”
