Coventry Building Society has won a National Sustainability Award for its carbon reduction programme.
Coventry was the first UK building society to be certified as a B Corp, and since 2020, it has reduced its Scope 1 and 2 carbon emissions by 34%.
The reduction was achieved by collaborating with colleagues, suppliers, and its property team to address carbon emissions throughout the business and its supply chains.
The initiatives included installing solar panels and air source heat pumps at its offices in Coventry, launching electric vehicle incentives for staff, and working with suppliers to achieve an ISO 20400 Sustainable Procurement accreditation.
Additionally, Coventry Building Society was ranked 7th among 85 UK lenders in independent analysis by Kamma in its Climate Transition report.
Sophie Mason, environmental and sustainability lead at Coventry Building Society, said: “As one of the country’s largest lenders, we know that housing is one of the main sources of carbon emissions in the country.
“And while we can encourage our members to make changes to their homes that are good for their pockets as well as the environment, it’s vital that we lead by example and make positive changes in our own business too.
“Achieving a 34% reduction in Scope 1 and 2 emissions is the result of a concerted effort from people across the Society and our suppliers. This award is amazing recognition of all that hard work.”
