The average home costs £300 per square foot, or about £8,280 for a standard double bed, according to data from Zoopla.
The lowest cost per square foot was in Hartlepool at £118, amounting to £3,257 for a double bed.
Kensington and Chelsea had the highest price, at £1,373 per square foot, equating to £37,895 for a double bed.
Inverclyde experienced the largest percentage increase in price per square foot outside of London, rising by 13.2% from £140 to £160.
Terraced homes offered the best value, with two-bedroom properties priced at £225 per square foot, while four-bedroom terraced homes were £235.
Zoopla’s data indicated that terraced and semi-detached homes with two bedrooms were similar in size at 860 square feet.
For three-bedroom homes, a terraced property was only 20 square feet smaller than a semi-detached one.
However, for four-bedroom homes, the size difference is significant at 70 square feet, which can accommodate an extra bathroom or office.
The average price per square foot in London was £585, with few homes available below the national average.
In Southern England, about a third of areas offer homes priced at £300 or less per square foot.
Historical seaside resorts, such as Portsmouth (£230) and Plymouth (£180), provided the most affordable options.
In other regions, the average price ranged from £145 in the North East to £240 in the West Midlands.
However, buyers would find it difficult to locate properties below the national average in city centres like Edinburgh (£410) and Birmingham (£420).
Izabella Lubowiecka, senior property researcher at Zoopla, said: “In many other countries, buyers often pay more attention to floor space and the cost per square meter or foot when searching for their next home and they are right in doing so.
“Looking at this measurement is a far more logical way to assess value for money, allowing buyers to compare different homes without having to step a foot inside a property.”
“A property that comes with an extra bedroom or bathroom might still not have the right amount of additional space the buyer is looking for, examining the square footage of a property can help buyers to identify if a property has that space and if the cost per square foot is worth it.”
