York named Britain’s most desirable place to live in 2024, research finds

York has been named Britain’s most desirable place to live in 2024, according to new research by housebuyers4u.

The study ranked local authorities based on house prices, culture, and various other factors. Following York are Nottingham, Blackpool, Edinburgh, and Newcastle upon Tyne.

Slough, Luton, Hove, Basildon, and Gillingham were identified as the least desirable places to move to in 2024.

The research evaluated five categories: culture, green spaces, housing affordability, utilities, and violent crime.

Each category received a score out of 100, contributing to a final index score.

York achieved a culture score of 78.36 and a green score of 100, leading to a final index score of 70.75, which is 38.9% above the national average of 50.90.

Nottingham ranked second with a final index score of 69.48 – its utilities score of 80.98 reflected energy prices below the national average.

Blackpool followed in third place with a score of 68.61, bolstered by a strong culture score and a decrease in violent crime.

Edinburgh came in fourth with a final index score of 67.93, featuring numerous parks and competitive energy prices.

Newcastle upon Tyne rounded out the top five with a final index score of 66.07, driven by affordable housing and good energy efficiency.

Slough scored the lowest due to its culture score of 14.88 and only six nature attractions, resulting in a final index score of 28.18, which is 44.6% below the national average.

Luton followed in second place among the least desirable locations with a score of 32.89, while Hove, Basildon, and Gillingham complete the bottom five.

Paul Gibbens, property expert at housebuyers4u, said: “These findings have highlighted the best places to live in 2024.

“York, a location known for historic buildings and picturesque landscapes that attract millions of visitors yearly, takes the top spot due to its unique combination of cultural vibrancy, abundant green spaces, and more.

“This recognition is a testament to York’s ability to balance tradition with modern amenities, making it a sought-after location for residents looking for both charm and practicality.”
