One in four hope to get on property ladder in 2025

As 2025 approaches, a significant number of people are setting their sights on homeownership as a New Year’s resolution.

According to new research from Barratt Redrow, the UK’s largest housebuilder, 26% of respondents in a survey of 2,216 people said getting on the property ladder is a key goal for the coming year. Among those who regularly make New Year’s resolutions, this figure rises to 41%.

Living in a home they love is a priority for 78% of respondents, though this sentiment varies across generations. It is most important to Baby Boomers (85%) and less so for Gen Z (69%).

The survey found that making New Year’s resolutions remains a popular tradition, with 30% of respondents regularly setting goals for the year ahead. This trend is especially pronounced among younger generations, with 44% of Gen Z and 42% of Millennials engaging in the practice.

Looking at the property market over the festive season also emerged as a popular pastime, even for those not immediately planning to move. Of those surveyed, 43% said they enjoy browsing for new homes over Christmas, a figure that jumps to 81% among those actively planning to move in 2025.

Home-based resolutions also ranked highly, with many respondents focusing on making or finishing home improvements, saving up to move, or tackling outstanding DIY projects. Goals included “keeping my home tidier,” “completing the kitchen renovation,” and “finishing all my DIY jobs.”

To support aspiring homeowners, Barratt Redrow is launching a New Year’s campaign aimed at helping more people get on the property ladder in 2025. The campaign will highlight the benefits of buying a new home, including energy efficiency—new homes are 60% more energy efficient than older properties—and the opportunity to purchase before the stamp duty relief ends on 31st March.

Steve Mariner, sales and marketing director at Barratt Redrow, said: “New Year resolutions still remain really popular and for a great many people getting on the property ladder will be top of their list. Buying a new home is a great way to make that first step, particularly with the wide range of mortgage schemes and incentives currently available for first time buyers.”
