Islington Council granted planning permission for social rent scheme

Islington Council has secured planning permission for 33 social rent homes on Vorley Road, along with a new GP surgery and public library.

The development will provide homes for up to 118 residents and includes an Access Islington Hub offering in-person support.

The scheme includes three blocks, with two set aside for social rent and one for Shared Ownership and private sale.

In total, 79 homes are planned: 33 for social rent, seven for Shared Ownership, and 39 for private sale.

All the homes will be built to low carbon standards and fitted with a heat pump system to help reduce energy bills and cut carbon emissions.

Each property will have a balcony overlooking Girdlestone Park or the city.

The council confirmed that priority for the new homes will go to local residents on the Housing Register who are most in need, in line with the local lettings policy.

Further improvements are planned for Girdlestone Park and nearby public spaces.

Councillor John Woolf, Executive Member for Homes and Neighbourhoods at Islington Council, said: “The approval of this planning application means we can deliver more genuinely affordable, high-quality homes for local people.

“At a time when the national housing crisis continues to deepen, and the climate emergency demands urgent action, it’s vital that we build as many low-carbon, affordable homes as we can.”

Councillor Sara Hyde, Executive Member for Health and Social Care at Islington Council, said: “This scheme will support a brand-new primary care centre delivered by NHS GPs, making it easier for local residents to access the healthcare they need in their community.”

This project forms part of Islington Council’s wider plan to tackle the housing crisis and improve public spaces in the borough.
