The Building Society Association and UK Finance have offered further guidance to mortgage holders looking to home refugees under the Homes for Ukraine scheme.
Over 200,000 people have registered to host Ukrainian refugees via the scheme, but it has been plagued by complaints over delays.
It has also emerged that, as of yesterday, just 10,800 people have arrived in the UK under the scheme.
Mortgage lenders have been quick to offer their support and earlier today Yorkshire Building Society confirmed its stance on helping borrowers homing refugees.
Now the trade bodies have moved to confirm wide market support for the scheme but warned that there are some exceptions such as in the case of repossession proceedings, customer vulnerability and cases of fraud.
A joint statement from the pair read:
UK Finance and the Building Societies Association said: “Mortgage lenders are supportive of the government’s Homes for Ukraine scheme which will enable homeowners across the UK to provide accommodation to refugees fleeing the war.
“UK Finance and the BSA are working closely with the government to ensure the scheme is implemented as quickly and simply as possible, and in a way that enables mortgage-holders to participate easily.
“Guidance for homeowners and landlords who wish to be part of the scheme is available on the government website.
“Further instructions will be available on your lender’s website. If your lender requires you to let them know someone will be staying with you, this should be done as the visa application is made for your guest(s).”
