Propertymark has pledged its support for Gas Safety Week, which runs from 8th to 14th September 2025 and highlighted the importance of gas safety in homes.
The week is coordinated by Gas Safe Register, the official list of engineers who are legally allowed to work on gas in the UK.
The aim is to raise awareness about the dangers of poorly maintained gas appliances, including gas leaks, fires, explosions, and carbon monoxide poisoning.
This year’s theme is ‘Looking after your home, friends, family’.
The campaign encourages everyone to share advice and check on immediate and extended family, friends, neighbours, landlords, and tenants.
Nathan Emerson, CEO at Propertymark, said: “This year, we’re proudly supporting Gas Safety Week, providing agents with vital safety information to promote awareness and prevent potentially dangerous appliance incidents.
“We encourage agents to utilise this opportunity to enhance their knowledge and contribute to a safer community.”
Propertymark advised that annual gas safety checks are required for all gas appliances, and they must be carried out by a Gas Safe registered engineer.
They said that tenants should ensure their landlord or managing agent arranges these checks.
Additionally, Propertymark noted that It is important to check the engineer’s registration on the Gas Safe Register website or by checking their ID card.
Propertymark also said warning signs that gas appliances may not be working correctly include lazy yellow or orange flames, black marks around the appliance, a pilot light that keeps going out, increased condensation in the room, or error messages on control panels.
Propertymark said homeowners should also make sure vents and flues are not blocked.
Furthermore, Propertymark advised the main symptoms of carbon monoxide poisoning are headaches, dizziness, breathlessness, nausea, collapse, and loss of consciousness.
Propertymark said DIY gas work is not advised, and added that before drilling or hammering, check there is no risk of hitting a gas pipe.
